Hey there !
You probably don’t see it, but there actually IS a connection between what’s happening in our world today and the Creation Story of Genesis 1 – one that is important – and empowering – for you to know about.
Like what we are experiencing now, this Creation Story was “born” in a time of massive upheaval and challenges for the ancient Jewish people. They were exiles in Babylon where they weren’t treated much better than immigrants and exiles are today.
In those days, Babylon was THE most powerful nation in the world so their beliefs and worldview shaped everything – including the prevalent understanding of how the world began. While there were many different “creation stories” at that time, the Babylonian creation story was the dominant one - the one everyone knew and most everyone believed.
Here’s the Cliff Notes version and why it matters to us now...
It was a story of a VIOLENT battle between two gods, Marduk and Tiamut – with Marduk emerging as the victor after he first stabbed Tiamet in the heart and then smashed her head on the rocks. Marduk then used his sword to split Tiamet’s body in half – and with one half of her body he created the sky and, with the other, the earth.
Like I said – violent. In this story, the world we live in was created OUT OF VIOLENCE, by a VIOLENT God. Understandably, the ancient Babylonians lived in FEAR of Marduk and the lesser gods he later created.
Which is where the connection to the COVID-19 pandemic comes in.
You see, the ancient Jewish people REJECTED this story of how the world was created and the God who created it. In the midst of a culture rooted in scarcity, violence and fear – they CHOSE a different story. They CHOSE to create and believe in a different narrative about life and the world – one rooted in beauty, order, goodness and abundance.
Despite what was happening to them, they CHOSE to believe that they were created by and were part of something bigger than themselves – something loving, generous, creative, resourceful, intelligent, powerful and eternal. They CHOSE to believe in a GOD of love, goodness, beauty, and abundance.
And THIS, my friend, is the opportunity we have in front of us now… and will have for many days, weeks and months ahead. Much like the Jewish people of old, we are living in a world where the primary “story” or narrative is one of fear and scarcity.
I’m not saying that these are not scary, uncertain and painful times. They ARE – as they were for the Jewish people centuries ago. But in the midst of them, we get to CHOOSE the narrative that will determine how we respond to this crisis and each other.
Will we go along with, buy into and even amplify a narrative of scarcity and fear and, in so doing, create more of it?
Will we choose to be anchored in and live by another narrative – one rooted in love and abundance?
And, just to be clear, I do not mean “abundance” as understood in our culture to me things like money and material possessions. My definition is more along the lines of what the Jewish people CHOSE to believe centuries ago about being part of something “bigger” than us.
I’m not saying it will be easy. I AM saying that we CAN do it – if we choose to. I know that’s what I’m committed to. And it’s what I’m committed to supporting others to do as well.
Which is why I’m inviting you to join me, beginning tomorrow (the 16th) for “Anchored in Abundance” – a daily Facebook-LIVE series that will support you to connect with and live from a place of abundance – a place of faith IN Abundance – as, together, we navigate this pandemic and its economic ripple effect.
