Hey there !
Happy New Year!
With all the conversations on Facebook and in emails these days about dreams, goals, and plans, I found myself remembering what happened last March when I was scheduled to go to Los Angeles for a workshop.
A few days prior, I started coming down with a cold so ramped up my self-care to nip it the bud. I was feeling pretty good the day of my flight, so was completely dumbfounded when my coach, Pat, asked me this question…
“Did you ask God?”
“Did I ask God what?” I queried.
“Did you ask God if it’s in your best interest and all involved for you to come to LA with a cold?”
Not only was my answer an adamant “NO!” – it never OCCURRED to me.
Back to this New Year…
Whether you’re the type of person who sets dreams, goals and intentions OR if you’re among those who refuse to do so, I have this question for you…
Have you asked God?
Specifically, have you asked God what GOD wants to create FOR you and THROUGH you in this New Year?
I’ll be honest. For most of my life, I didn’t – just like that day last March. Rather, I simply decided what I wanted and what I was going to do and ASSUMED God was “on board” with my plans and would help.
I now know that’s backwards. That’s ego using God for its purposes instead of letting God use us for God’s purposes.
Of course, to let God work FOR and THROUGH us means we have to trust that (1) God is a God of Love who only wants good for us and the world and (2) God knows more (and better) than we do.
No small feat in our American/Western culture. We pride ourselves on our independence and self-reliance – on our ability to MAKE things happen. We love the idea of the self-made man or self-made woman. “Surrender” is a dirty word – a sign of weakness and failure rather than a sign of courage, power and faith.
But if we truly believe in a God of Love and Abundance, then we have to believe that what this God wants for us IS love and abundance. Not just for us individually – but for ALL of us.
Which brings me back to my original question…
Have you asked God?
If you’re feeling defensive or resistant, I GET IT. That’s EXACTLY how I responded when Pat asked me that question last March. After all, what if I asked and the answer I got was “NO”? We so often assume that what God wants is at odds with what we want.
But it’s not an either/or. You DO have a say – YOUR dreams and desires are important, . They are a catalyst for new life and growth.
It’s only when you get ATTACHED to them that it causes problems. It’s when you make and try to accomplish them in a vacuum, disconnected from God, that you will experience unnecessary scarcity and struggle.
Last March, with Pat’s question rattling in my mind, I realized I couldn’t get on board the plane with a clear conscious if I didn’t check. So, in the midst of the Milwaukee airport, I finally asked.
And the answer I got was NOT what I expected.
First, I got the clear signal I WAS to go to LA. But the real gift was the message that, more often than I expect, what God wants for me are the same things I want – OR BETTER. But if I’m not willing to ask, I will never get the assurance of this “YES”.
As for the times the answer I get is “no”, then faith is trusting in the “OR BETTER” God has in store for me. So that I can be open (not attached) to my plans and remember that “abundance is KNOWING that we are part of something bigger than us – more loving, generous, creative, resourceful, intelligent – and we have access to all that we
need.”
Sometimes what we need is the exact same thing we want. And sometimes it’s not. And ALWAYS, in the bigger picture, we can have faith that it will be MUCH BETTER.
But we have to be willing to ASK. So, at the beginning of this New Year (and this new day)…
Have you asked God, ?
xoxo
