Hey there !
Have you ever played the game of "Where's your mouth/ears/nose?" with a small child?
Well, this morning I had to play that game with myself. This morning I needed to keep touching my nose to remember that I don’t have to try to force or control Life… that I can relax and trust the process of Life.
Why my nose?
It goes back to a weekend intensive I led years ago and some spotlight coaching I was doing with Steve. Steve had recently lost his teaching job. He had been promised by the School District that they would place him in another job, yet Steve was super-stressed – not knowing what school it would be, what he’d be teaching, how much he would be
paid and whether he would like it as much as his old job.
In reaction, he was already playing out all sorts of scenarios in his mind – trying to figure out how he would respond to each. He was not only trying to figure out his “Plan B”, but also a Plan C, D and E! He wasn’t sleeping all that well. Despite the fact that it was July and he was in the midst of his summer vacation, he wasn’t
enjoying it or doing any of the fun things he usually did. Instead, he was stressing out about all of the unknowns in his future.
Steve was trying to CONTROL Life instead of TRUST Life – something that I could immediately recognize because I have spent much of my life doing the exact same thing.
In a moment of inspiration, I blurted out this question…
“Steve, do you have a nose?”
He looked at me, a puzzled expression on his face.
“Of course I have a nose!”
Then he touched it with a laugh.
“So, how did you get your nose?”
“I don’t know. It just grew when I was in my mom’s womb.”
“You mean you didn’t have to do anything while you were in the womb to get your nose?”
“Nope.”
“It just showed up, in perfect timing?”
“Yeah, you could say that.”
“So imagine that you were there in your mother’s womb and you started worrying about and stressing about getting a nose. That you started thinking of all sorts of scenarios where you might not get a nose and you tried to figure out a Plan B for not having a nose – as well as Plan C, D and E.”
Steve laughed. “That would be silly!”
“Why?”
“Because I am not the one who has to grow my nose. Me growing a nose is all part of God’s design. I don’t have to do anything – just relax, be patient and trust the process of Life.”
I paused.
“So what if the same thing were true for you in terms of you having a new job – even one that you will enjoy? What if it’s already part of God’s design and all you really have to do is relax, be patient and trust the process of Life?”
Steve visibly began to relax at the very thought of that.
“I like the sound of that.”
Then he touched his nose with an impish grin, declaring, “And every time I start stressing and planning and trying to control things, I can touch my nose to remind me.”
Everyone in the room laughed and cheered.
I have never forgotten that moment. Since then, there have been many days when I have had to touch my own nose to remind me. There have also been many days when I have completely forgotten this conversation and have jumped back into trying to FORCE things to happen – to FORCE Life – instead of TRUSTING the Life Force.
And that’s when things get hard. That’s when I get crabby with my husband. When I start working long hours. When I don’t take time to exercise or do things to take care of me. When I cut or skip my morning prayer and quiet time. When I have a hard time falling asleep because my mind won’t shut off. It’s also when I
start binge-watching shows – trying to escape all of my fear, stress and worry.
Which is exactly what’s been happening these past few days.
And then, this morning, I remembered to touch my nose. I also remembered the definition of abundance I was given in a divine download earlier this year.
“Abundance is KNOWING (in our bodies, in our guts) that we are part of something bigger than us – something more loving, generous, creative, powerful, resourceful, intelligent, eternal – AND we have access to ALL that we need.”
I’m not saying that there aren’t actions for us to take to be able to live lives we enjoy, to achieve our goals, to make and manage our finances, to succeed in our businesses and/or jobs.
We do.
Yet sometimes the most important thing to do – the most empowering action – is to touch our noses and remember that we can trust the process of Life. To remember that we are part of a bigger plan and things will unfold, in perfect timing, if we will only let ourselves relax, be patient, trust and enjoy the journey.
Where's your nose, ?
Touch it right now - to remind you that you can trust the process of Life. You can relax, be patient, trust the process and enjoy the journey - today and every day!
xoxo
Teresa
